WASHINGTON, July 16, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- The Independence Fund presented an all-terrain track chair to a seriously wounded Veteran at the 14th annual Celebrity Sweat Softball Challenge at Joint Base Anacostia Bolling (JBAB) in Washington, DC on Saturday. Todd Reed served with the 82nd Airborne Division and had been assigned to the 10th Special Forces Group doing reconnaissance when he stepped on a landmine near Mosul, Iraq in 1991. After being medically retired from the U.S. Army, Reed became the first amputee to ever complete the rigorous activities of a police academy then served almost 21 years with the Mesa Police Department in Arizona.
"This chair gives me a new dimension of independence," said Reed. "Now I can go deep into the woods for hunting and ride on a sandy beach with my family. It even has a snow plow attachment for my driveway. I am so incredibly grateful to The Independence Fund."
Reed, an avid softball player despite wearing a prosthetic on his right leg, played on legendary fitness trainer Billy Blank's team against another celebrity team coached by former Major League Baseball star Jose Canseco.
"Since 2007, The Independence Fund has been empowering severely wounded Veterans like Todd Reed and their Caregivers to take control of their lives," said Sarah Verardo, Executive Director of The Independence Fund. "It's our honor and greatest joy to provide the resources and tools that enable Veterans to regain their independence, and fight for their ability to sustain it."
The Independence Fund will be presenting track chairs to wounded Veterans at upcoming Florida Georgia Line concerts in Des Moines, IA (August 19), Panama City, FL (August 31), and Las Vegas, NV (December 7). More than 2,200 all-terrain track chairs have been given to wounded veterans through The Independence Fund's mobility program. A typical chair costs about $16,000.
The Independence Fund is a Veteran's service organization dedicated to meeting the unmet needs of wounded and service-related ill veterans through mobility, adaptive sports, caregiver, family and advocacy programs.
