The HNBA Renews Its Call for Comprehensive Immigration Reform
WASHINGTON, April 30 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Yesterday afternoon, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV), Senators Richard Durbin (D-IL), Charles Schumer (D-NY), Patrick Leahy (D-VT), Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) and Robert Menendez (D-NJ) announced a preliminary framework of comprehensive immigration reform legislation. "The framework is an important step toward reform legislation, but it must be followed by a bipartisan commitment to pass legislation in both Houses of Congress," stated Mr. Roman D. Hernandez, HNBA National President.
The anti-immigrant legislation recently signed into law in Arizona highlights the pressing need for legislation at the federal level. Mr. Hernandez further noted, "We cannot let municipalities, county and state governments attempt to legislate on matters that are of federal concern. The Arizona law is an example of likely unconstitutional results that can occur when Congress fails to act. The HNBA applauds Senator Reid for bringing this issue back to the forefront and commends the leadership of these Senators as they work to devise solutions to one of our most pressing national issues."
The HNBA remains committed to working with Members of Congress to develop comprehensive immigration reform, and urges them to act expeditiously to fix this country's broken immigration system.
The HNBA is an incorporated, not-for-profit, nonpartisan, national membership organization that represents the interests of the more than 100,000 Hispanic attorneys, judges, law professors, legal assistants, and law students in the United States, Puerto Rico and the U.S. territories.
