The Hispanic Leadership Fund Asks ED to Reconsider Gainful Employment
WASHINGTON, Nov. 5, 2010 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Hispanic Leadership Fund today testified in front of the Department of Education in response to the proposed Gainful Employment rule that will deny financial aid to students who wish to attend career colleges if they don't meet an arbitrary debt-to-income ratio after they graduate. These regulations will severely limit higher education access for minority groups – in particular Hispanic students – and the government should not be interfering with student choice. Mario H. Lopez, president of The Hispanic Leadership Fund, made the following statement.
"Students have the right to choose the education and career path that they will pursue, and not have it restricted by arbitrary debt-to-income ratios. The department's own studies show that career colleges will be the hardest hit by the Gainful Employment rule, and that means that minorities will be the hardest hit by its implementation.
"The president has explicitly set a goal of having the highest proportion of college graduates in the world by 2020. In order to do this we have to put a special focus on helping the students who are considered at-risk and who have a harder time not only getting to college, but graduating with a degree. Career colleges play an extremely important role in helping those students.
"Gainful Employment is going to have drastic consequences for at-risk students who are pursuing degrees because it will be hurting the students who need to borrow money the most."
