The Herpes Vaccine in Development, and What to do While You Wait

SARASOTA, Fla., Nov. 21, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- "Herpes is one of those virus that's just amazing at evading our immune system," says Harvey M. [2] So far, the vaccine has been tested on monkeys (macaque) and guinea pigs.  Monkey and humans have different HSV symptoms.  The researchers found the monkey's immune systems responded in the way they anticipated.  The vaccine was very effective in the guinea pigs.  It protected most of the guinea pigs from herpes, and reduced the presence of the virus in the infected guinea pigs.  Humans and guinea pigs have similar HSV symptoms.

"I really do think this is more promising than other vaccine research out there," Friedman said. "I've never seen anything published that comes close to our efficacy." [2] Friedman says that the vaccine is groundbreaking since it prevents the virus from evading the immune system. He notes, "And that could really open up the field, not just for herpes. There are so many chronic, persistent, recurrent viruses that we could use this strategy on." [2]
