The Green Schools & Community Colleges Revolution: Summits This Week!
PASADENA, Calif., Sept. 24, 2012 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- On September 27-28, green leaders and innovators from California's schools and community colleges will meet at the sixth annual Pasadena Convention Center for the 2012 Green California Schools and Community Colleges Summits.
The two-day event will include an Expo featuring hundreds of green products and services, a complete education program with breakout sessions led by experts and innovators in facilities, energy, curriculum and other green disciplines. The annual Green Leadership Awards for excellence in schools and community colleges sustainability efforts will take place on September 27, and on the 28th there will be a special daylong workshop focused on California's groundbreaking Education and the Environment (EEI) materials, the nation's first K-12 environmental literacy curriculum.
The Summit's keynote session will begin at 9:00 am on September 27 and feature environmentalist Kelly Meyer, a Trustee of the Natural Resources Defense Council and co-founder of the American Heart Association's "Teaching Gardens" program. She'll be joined by State Architect Chester "Chet" Widom and Henry A.J. Ramos of the California Community Colleges Board of Governors.
Among the many events that are available free of charge at the Summits will be a special session on the American Heart Association's Teaching Gardens, founded by Kelly Meyer that aims for 1,000 school gardens by 2014.
The Summits offer a rare opportunity for stakeholders – from architects to teachers, to policy makers and product manufactures - to share information and best practices. The education programs cover a range of topics, from a revolutionary new system of major energy saving data collection at community colleges to the new federal Green Ribbon Schools framework.
These events, the largest of their kind in the state, were developed under the leadership of Advisory Boards chaired by State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Torlakson, Mr. Widom, California Public Utilities Commissioner, Timothy A. Simon, Erik Skinner, acting Chancellor of the California Community Colleges and Van Ton-Quinlivan, Vice Chancellor, Economic Development and Workforce Preparation for the California Community Colleges Chancellor's Office.
"The Summits are designed to celebrate and support the vital role that California's schools and community colleges play in the sustainability movement," said Green Technology editor in chief Carl Smith. "We want to provide attendees with a unique annual opportunity to take stock of what's working in facilities and curriculum."
