The Greater Boston Food Bank honors Massachusetts Attorney General Maura Healey with its 2017 Women Fighting Hunger Award

Attorney General Maura Healey was honored for her work protecting and strengthening the rights of the most vulnerable across the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. She has led efforts to combat public health crises such as gun violence and opioid use. Her Healthy Summer Youth Jobs program provides employment for 150 young people from underserved communities at community health centers and providers, making the connection between children living in low-income households and poor health outcomes.

"Attorney General Maura Healey is a champion of the most vulnerable among us" said Catherine D'Amato, president and CEO of The Greater Boston Food Bank. "Most recently, she joined a coalition of 35 attorneys general opposed to threatened cuts to federal low-income energy assistance programs. Our attorney general knows that these cuts would lead to even more Massachusetts families having to make the impossible choice between staying warm and going hungry."

Past recipients of the Women Fighting Hunger Award include Lt. Gov. Karyn Polito, State Treasurer Deborah B. Goldberg, U.S. Rep.  Katherine Clark, restaurateur Jody Adams and former Attorney General Martha Coakley.

Timed to coincide with the observance of Hunger Action Month, a nationwide annual effort to raise awareness about hunger, this year's Woman Fighting Hunger Breakfast was held at the Mandarin Oriental, Boston, 7:30 a.m. to 9:00 a.m., Friday, Sept. 8, 2017, and drew 350 attendees.

One in 10 people in Eastern Massachusetts is at risk of hunger every day. For every dollar donated, GBFB can distribute three healthy meals.
