NEW YORK, March 16, 2021 /PRNewswire/ -- This past year the French Bulldog took over Dallas' top spot in the American Kennel Club's (AKC®) 2020 ranking of the most popular AKC-recognized dog breeds in the U.S.

The French Bulldog was also recognized as the #1 pup in Atlanta, New York City, and Chicago.

The Frenchie's increased popularity helped knock last year's top dog, the Bulldog down to 4th place. This shift also helped the Golden Retriever jump to 2nd place from 4th, while the Labrador Retriever holds steady in 3rd place, and the German Shepherd Dog rounds out Dallas' top five breeds.

"The Frenchie is a great family and apartment dog so it's no surprise that it's been getting a lot of love this year." said AKC Executive Secretary Gina DiNardo. "It will be interesting to see if it has staying power next year."

The AKC also announced its nationwide rankings today at the AKC Museum of the Dog in NYC. The Labrador Retriever celebrates a milestone!  The loveable Lab remains the number one most popular breed in the United States for the 30th year.

While the Lab holds firmly to the top spot, the French Bulldog has continued to skyrocket in popularity. The Frenchie landed at number two in 2020, knocking the German Shepherd Dog down to third. The German Shepherd Dog had been the second most popular dog breed since 2009.
