CLEVELAND, Dec. 12, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Researchers at Trinity College, Dublin, are opening up new commercial possibilities for graphene by combining the material with Silly Putty. The mixture (known as "G-putty") forms a highly sensitive pressure detector able to sense pulse, blood pressure, respiration, and even the footsteps of a small spider.
The research team's findings were published Thursday in Science, and can be read here: http://science.sciencemag.org/content/354/6317/1257
Due to its extreme conductivity, flexibility, and light weight, graphene (a two dimensional form of carbon) has long attracted researchers in electronics, energy, and medical fields. According to Freedonia analyst Carolyn Zulandt, the development of G-putty illustrates graphene's significant long-term potential in biomedical monitoring devices, as well as in commercial applications such as flexible sensors in athletic apparel.
The global market for graphene is forecast to reach over $2 billion by 2035, according to Zulandt in a study from the Freedonia Group. "Near term advances will largely be driven by graphene-based composites used in food packaging, piping, and protective apparel, as high material costs have limited wider adoption of graphene in electronic and energy applications." If possible to manufacture on a large scale, "the new G-putty mixture could offer a low-cost way to produce a highly accurate nanocomposite sensor, offering new opportunities for graphene in the biomedical market."
