Empowering Customers & Cities is designed for the energy ecosystem including utilities, policy makers, energy providers and large energy consumers for collaboration around urban infrastructure solutions and insight sharing from those leading the way in transforming their businesses.
"A collaboration between industry, universities and entrepreneurs is extending the range of what is possible in energy innovation," said Marty Rosenberg, Editorial Director, The Energy Times and Co-Chair, Empowering Customers & Cities. "At Empowering Customers & Cities we will take a deep dive into energy innovation in schools and campuses in Chicago and beyond as educators prepare the next-generation of leaders to solve the challenges in the sustainability and energy spaces."
Northwestern University is collaborating with Empowering Customers & Cities to have William Kamkwamba, inventor and author of "The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind" speak at the conference. Kamkwamba's story supports the students at colleges and universities all over the United States who are changing the world around them.
Kamkwamba said, "In rural areas in Malawi only 2 percent of the population have access to electricity. I was determined to teach myself how to build a windmill to help my family power radio, light and other small electric appliances. I believe electricity is the key to economic growth and development in many countries. I am very pleased that the windmill I created has started the conversation about 'energy poverty' and the need to accelerate electricity market development in underprivileged countries. I look forward to sharing my story with Empowering Customer & Cities participants."
In addition, Northwestern University's Institute for Sustainability and Energy (ISEN) is a hub for sustainability and energy research, education, and public engagement to empower real change in the industry. ISEN is a true part of the energy revolution in Chicago and can act as a blueprint for cities around the country and the world. ISEN collaborates with the Joint Center for Energy Storage Research at Argonne National Laboratory and is involved in other public-private partnerships and research agreements; it has built a diverse education portfolio at both the undergraduate and graduate level; it is jumpstarting the development of the next-generation solar technology for Northwestern's solar car team and mentoring student-led sustainable social business in Africa; and offers a course called "NUvention: Energy," challenging students to innovate in the sustainable-energy and clean tech industries.
In a recent article in The Energy Times, Monika Wnuk, Northwestern University's Institute for Sustainability and Energy integrated marketing and communications manager wrote, "With a commitment to students and student professional development, ISEN continues to grow its diverse, multidisciplinary educational portfolio, preparing our next generation of business and civic leaders to solve grand challenges in the sustainability and energy spaces."
In addition, Chicago has budding young talent in the form of students engaged in Energy clubs. The mission of these groups is to educate and research a sustainable environment for long-term solutions to energy production and use.
