TULSA, Okla., Feb. 26, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Hogan Assessments has launched a newly enhanced version of its flagship assessment, the Hogan Development Survey (HDS), the only personality assessment that identifies the dark side of personality.
Dark side personality describes qualities that may be strengths under pressure – drive becomes ruthlessness, attention to detail becomes micromanaging. And, from the occasional outburst to a headline-worthy meltdown, when the dark side comes out, it can derail careers and companies. But, it doesn't have to.
Launched in 1997, the HDS has been instrumental to the success of organizations across the globe. Now, the assessment provides users with even deeper interpretive data, providing them the strategic self-awareness they need to keep from going off the rails.
"From demanding bosses to the monotony of daily office life, the working world is full of stressors that cause our dark sides to come out," said Dr. Tomas Chamorro-Premuzic, vice president of research and innovation at Hogan. "The HDS, especially with the new subscales, gives you the deep understanding and self-awareness you need to keep those tendencies under control, and avoid the conflicts they cause."
The HDS measures dark side personality characteristics, or derailers, along 11 primary scales: Excitable, Skeptical, Cautious, Reserved, Leisurely, Bold, Mischievous, Colorful, Imaginative, Diligent and Dutiful.
The higher you score along a particular scale, the more likely you are to behave a certain way when you're stressed. While the primary scales tell you what your derailers are, the new subscales tell you how those derailers will show up in your day-to-day life.
For instance, the Excitable scale is broken into three subscales: Volatile, Easily Disappointed and No Direction. If a subject scores high under the "Volatile" subscale, they are at risk to lose control of their emotions and react in interpersonally harsh ways. If they score low under the "No Direction" subscale, it is unlikely they will dwell on past mistakes.
"It was important for us at Hogan to delve deeper into the dark side of personality because it tends to be the most noticeable and detrimental," Chamorro-Premuzic said. "These dark side tendencies are often adaptive but, if left unchecked, they are also likely to contribute to your downfall. They are the toxic assets of personality."
Along with the introduction of the new HDS subscales, Hogan has launched an interactive website that breaks down the most common derailers by industry, occupation, age, gender and geographic location. It also features a "Leading from the Dark Side" tool that helps people learn about their bosses, and how to deal with their derailers.
