The Corps Network to Host 2nd Annual Day of Service in the Nation's Capital
WASHINGTON, May 14, 2015 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- On Friday, June 19th, The Corps Network will lead its 2nd Annual Day of Service in the Nation's Capital as part of national Great Outdoors Month.
Following a morning kick-off event with inspirational speakers, volunteers will work on service projects at National Park Service sites including the Franklin D. Roosevelt Memorial, Rock Creek Park, and Theodore Roosevelt Island. The event seeks to raise awareness about the importance of environmental conservation and the role service can play in protecting America's natural spaces.
The event will begin at the Franklin D. Roosevelt Memorial. President Roosevelt launched the Civilian Conservation Corps: a model for the present day Service and Conservation Corps programs that comprise the membership of The Corps Network and also participate in the 21st Century Conservation Service Corps Initiative. Corpsmembers from across the country will participate, as well as friends and partners of The Corps Network.
Invited speakers for the morning event include U.S. Secretary of the Interior Sally Jewell, U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack, Corporation for National & Community Service CEO Wendy Spencer, U.S. Forest Service Chief Tom Tidwell, and 2015 Corpsmember of the Year Graciela Billingsley.
"Americans have a long history of conserving nature, our parks, and greenspaces through service. We hope the Day of Service in the Nation's Capital continues that tradition and inspires new generations to serve in their own communities," said Mary Ellen Sprenkel, President & CEO of The Corps Network.
Members of the media are invited to participate in the event and speak with Corpsmembers who have traveled to the Day of Service from across the nation. These Corpsmembers represent the 23,000 young people, ages 16-25, who annually enroll in Corps and receive job training, academic programming, leadership skills, and additional support while participating in service projects that tackle some of America's greatest challenges.

A sign-up form and additional information for the event can be found at www.corpsnetwork.org/day-of-service. Transportation to project sites and lunches will be provided for participants.
