The Conference Board Leading Economic Index® (LEI) for the U.K. Increases
NEW YORK, Oct. 10, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- The Conference Board Leading Economic Index® (LEI) for the U.K. increased 0.4 percent in August to 112.5 (2004 = 100), following a 0.1 percent increase in July, and a 0.7 percent increase in June.
At the same time, The Conference Board Coincident Economic Index® (CEI) for the U.K., a measure of current economic activity, increased 0.2 percent in August to 107.6 (2004 = 100), following a 0.1 percent increase in July, and a 0.1 percent increase in June.
The LEI's upward trend since last summer has moderated in recent months. As a result, its six-month growth rate has also slowed compared to six months ago. Meanwhile, the six-month growth rate of the CEI has remained at about the same level over the past year. Taken together, the composite indexes suggest that economic activity is likely to continue advancing through the rest of the year, although the pace is not likely to pick up considerably.
About The Conference Board Leading Economic Index® (LEI) for the U.K.
The composite economic indexes are the key elements in an analytic system designed to signal peaks and troughs in the business cycle. The leading and coincident economic indexes are essentially composite averages of several individual leading or coincident indicators. They are constructed to summarize and reveal common turning point patterns in economic data in a clearer and more convincing manner than any individual component – primarily because they smooth out some of the volatility of individual components.
The seven components of The Conference Board Leading Economic Index® for the U.K. include:
Order Book Volume, CBI Monthly Enquiry
Volume of Expected Output, CBI Monthly Enquiry
Consumer Confidence
Stock Prices, FTSE all share price index
Yield Spread, 10 years minus Bank Rate
Productivity, Whole Economy Index
