The Conference Board Leading Economic Index® (LEI) for Mexico Increases
NEW YORK, June 20, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- The Conference Board Leading Economic Index® (LEI) for Mexico increased 0.9 percent in April to 122.0 (2004 = 100), following a 0.1 percent decline in March, and a 1.6 percent decline in February.
At the same time, The Conference Board Coincident Economic Index® (CEI) for Mexico, a measure of current economic activity, increased 0.3 percent in April to 123.6 (2004 = 100), following a 0.3 percent increase in March, and no change in February.
The LEI for Mexico increased in April following declines in the previous four months. The six-month change in the index remains negative, but the rate of decline is moderating. Meanwhile, the rate of growth in the CEI has continued to pick up. Although it may be too early to predict an acceleration in the rate of economic expansion, the improvement in both the LEI and the CEI over the last six months suggests that downside risks are diminishing.
About The Conference Board Leading Economic Index® (LEI) for Mexico
The composite economic indexes are the key elements in an analytic system designed to signal peaks and troughs in the business cycle. The leading and coincident economic indexes are essentially composite averages of several individual leading or coincident indicators. They are constructed to summarize and reveal common turning point patterns in economic data in a clearer and more convincing manner than any individual component – primarily because they smooth out some of the volatility of individual components.
