The Conference Board Leading Economic Index® (LEI) for Korea Declines
NEW YORK, Aug. 11, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- The Conference Board Leading Economic Index® (LEI) for Korea decreased 0.4 percent in June to 122.2 (2004 = 100), following a 0.5 percent increase in May, and a 0.3 percent decrease in April.
At the same time, The Conference Board Coincident Economic Index® (CEI) for Korea, a measure of current economic activity, increased 0.1 percent in June to 115.7 (2004 = 100), following a 0.3 percent increase in May and a 0.3 percent decrease in April.
The Conference Board LEI for Korea has been fluctuating around a slightly rising trend since the beginning of this year, but its six-month growth rate has moderated from the second half of last year. Meanwhile, The Conference Board CEI for Korea continued to increase in June, and its six-month growth rate has remained fairly steady so far. The current behavior of the composite indexes and their components suggest that, despite short-term volatility, economic expansion should continue in the coming months.
About The Conference Board Leading Economic Index® (LEI) for Korea
The composite economic indexes are the key elements in an analytic system designed to signal peaks and troughs in the business cycle. The leading and coincident economic indexes are essentially composite averages of several individual leading or coincident indicators. They are constructed to summarize and reveal common turning point patterns in economic data in a clearer and more convincing manner than any individual component -- primarily because they smooth out some of the volatility of individual components.
