The Colt Car Company Selects MobileIron for BlackBerry and iPhone Security
MOUNTAIN VIEW, California, November 10, 2011 /PRNewswire/ --
Colt Also Plan to Use MobileIron to Roll out BYOD Program
The Colt Car Company Ltd., the sole distributor of Mitsubishi Motors in the UK, has chosen MobileIron to manage and safeguard a new fleet of corporate-owned BlackBerry and Apple smartphones and enable a Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) program.
While Colt has provided mobile devices to senior executives for many years, it was experiencing mounting pressure from its wider employee-base to use personal devices for work. During the project to replace its executives' traditional PDAs with modern smart devices, Colt saw an opportunity to increase productivity and build goodwill amongst the remainder of the workforce by enabling them to bring their own device.
In the past, requests from users to get their work email on their personal device was always met with the same response from the IT team - No. Stuart Smith, IT Manager at The Colt Car Company, was keen to change this. He explains, "The team had no visibility or control over what these personal devices were doing, and securing what you can't see is impossible. While pressure for using consumer smart devices used to come primarily from senior executives, this has changed dramatically today. Everyone wants some form of business application on their personal device.
"As we looked to update the corporate-owned devices and assess our mobile security and management capabilities, we realised we needed to extend the project to meet the needs of this user group too."
Smith and his team assessed products from across the market, including Good Technology and McAfee. Colt chose MobileIron for its core ability to protect the user experience, its superior multi-OS security and management capabilities and its ease of administration and automation. He explains: "We needed a truly multi-OS solution. MobileIron was without doubt the most comprehensive. It encompassed all and any device, where we found the others put restrictions on Android devices, for example. We were also impressed with how MobileIron delves into the different operating systems to retain the native experience of the individual device. Protecting the user experience was important, so the segmentation and sandbox processes from other vendors were no good for us."
The mobilisation of the workforce at Colt has significantly increased in the last year and Smith expects iPads to be a regular part of the fleet within 18 months. He says, "The way we work is changing. Take our dealerships; it's easy to see how the collaborative nature of the iPad can benefit customer interactions and sales on the showroom floor."
MobileIron will be implemented by AVR International Limited, security solutions specialists, AVR. Smith continues, "Our technology has to match the needs of the business, and enabling smart devices is crucial. With MobileIron, we can protect the integrity of corporate data for our Blackberry and Apple users today without impacting their experience. Moreover, we can be confident that we have a platform that can take on any device or OS as we move forward. We know that we have the flexibility to say 'yes' to a Galaxy Tab should it come through our doors tomorrow."
