The Clean Economy Network Applauds Meg Whitman's Decision to Oppose Proposition 23
SAN FRANCISCO, Sept. 23 /PRNewswire/ -- The Clean Economy Network (CEN) today applauded Republican gubernatorial candidate Meg Whitman's decision to oppose Prop. 23, an initiative that, if passed, would severely handicap the one bright spot in California's recession-plagued economy -- the clean energy sector.
With her announcement, Whitman joins a growing number of California leaders of every political stripe, including her Democratic opponent Jerry Brown and No on 23 Campaign co-chair and former Reagan Secretary of State George Schultz, in opposing Prop 23. Clearly, this is not a partisan issue.
Martin Lagod, CEN Board Member and Managing Director of Firelake Capital said, "The Clean Economy Network applauds Meg Whitman's decision to join a bi-partisan group of leaders from across the state to oppose Prop 23. Defeating Prop 23 will protect 12,000 companies and 500,000 jobs, plus $9.5 billion in private investment, that are actively building California's clean energy economy.'
Prop 23 will decimate California's climate and energy laws. If passed, Prop 23 would overturn or threaten 72 existing policies, including statewide goals to generate more power from renewable energy sources like wind and solar, standards requiring cleaner burning fuels in cars and trucks, standards for more energy efficient buildings, and the cap on carbon pollution.
Additionally, passage of Prop 23 would effectively pull the rug out from under entrepreneurs who have made long-term investments in California. This poorly designed measure will lead to more regulatory uncertainty and chaos for California businesses and will harm California's rapidly growing clean energy economy.
