The City of Wilton Manors Takes Part In Marine Industries Association of South Florida Waterway Cleanup

WILTON MANORS, Fla., Feb. 24, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- With great waterways comes great responsibility.

Volunteers are needed on March 1 at 9 a.m. at the Colohatchee Park Boat Ramp in Wilton Manors to venture out by boat and by foot and collect tires, plastic bags, shopping carts, water bottles, gas cans and any other trash or debris they find – all part of the 37th Annual Marine Industries Association of South Florida Waterway Cleanup.

Last year 2,000 volunteers and 70 boats from around Broward County, including Wilton Manors, removed 18.6 tons of garbage from rivers and canals.

"Known as the Island City, we need to pay particular attention to the health and beauty of South Florida's waterways. I'd like to encourage everyone to take some time on March 1, 2014 and do their part to keep Wilton Manors' waterways looking their best," said Mayor Gary Resnick.

The Waterway Cleanup is open to all members of the public, regardless of age and boat ownership. Those who don't own a boat can still help out by picking up trash and debris found on the banks of South Florida's waterways. High school students and those who need volunteer hours can get credit for their efforts during the event.

To register for the Colohatchee Park event, visit www.miasf.org/event/colohatchee. Adult supervision is required for participants 15 years old and younger. Those who register early for the event will get a special Waterway Cleanup shirt.

High school and middle school students also have the chance to win scholarship money by entering the essay and short story contests. The high school winner will receive a $500 scholarship and the middle school winner gets $250. The deadline to enter is February 21.

After the Waterway Cleanup, a party for volunteers will be held at the Dania Beach Pier, 300 N. Beach Road, Dania Beach. There will be food, drinks, door prizes and live entertainment provided by "The New Revolution."
