The City of Boston Selects Gilbane to Construct New Dearborn 6-12 STEM/Early College Academy in Roxbury
Gilbane Building Company, in association with Roxbury-based Janey Company, set to deliver new state-of-the-art school facility in Dudley Square
BOSTON, Jan. 29, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Mayor Martin J. Walsh and the City of Boston have selected Gilbane Building Company to provide Construction Management at-Risk Services for the construction of their first new school building in more than a decade. The project award was made to Gilbane in association with Roxbury-owned partner Janey Construction Management. The project will be a collaboration between the COB Property and Construction Management Department, Jonathan Levi Architects, Daedalus and Gilbane. Funding for the project will come from the City of Boston and the Massachusetts School Building Authority.
"The new Dearborn school is a tremendous economic opportunity for the City of Boston and specifically for residents in the Roxbury neighborhood. Together, Gilbane and Janey look forward to making this project a huge success and a source of pride for its students, for the neighborhood and the City of Boston for years to come," said Ryan Hutchins, Senior Vice President, for Gilbane.
The school will be transformed into a science/technology/engineering/math (STEM)-focused school for grades 6-12 preparing students for early college access and will include cutting-edge science and engineering labs. The school will be built on the Dearborn school's current site on Greenville Street. Dearborn has temporarily relocated its classrooms to Burke High School in Dorchester.
A few blocks away in Dudley Square, the City of Boston will soon open the Bolling Municipal Building. The on-going construction of the building has provided many jobs for Boston residents and is a significant economic stimulus to the neighborhood and surrounding businesses. "We look forward to building on the success of the Bolling project, creating more jobs and reinvesting more money back into our local economy," noted Mayor Walsh. "STEM careers are some of the fastest growing in Boston and it's important that we provide high-quality education and learning opportunities to prepare students for the jobs of today and of the future."
Construction will start in the spring of 2015 and will be completed for the 2017-2018 academic year.
