WASHINGTON, Aug. 17, 2016 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Clinical Psychology Doctoral Program (Psy.D.) at The Chicago School of Professional Psychology's Washington, D.C. Campus has been granted accreditation for seven years by the American Psychological Association (APA), the only organization recognized by the U.S. Department of Education to accredit doctoral-level health service psychology programs. APA accreditation is recognition that the program meets the rigorous standards set by the APA's Commission on Accreditation (CoA), and that students receive training by adequately trained and numbered faculty within a program that is sequentially organized and well-resourced. The Chicago School (TCSPP) is one of the leading nonprofit universities devoted to psychology, and behavioral health sciences.
"We are thrilled to have earned APA accreditation for the full seven years; it is indicative of the exceptional effort put forth by our faculty, staff and students," said Heather Sheets, Psy.D., campus dean, Washington, D.C. Campus. "APA accreditation is the highest recommendation a clinical psychology program can receive, and because we are now accredited, our students will be qualified to pursue licensure in Washington, D.C., Maryland, and many other states. Additionally, accreditation gives students access to a broader range of internships and postdoctoral training sites, as well as increases their employment opportunities with the federal government."
The Washington, D.C. Campus, established in 2010, graduated its first Clinical Psy.D. Program cohort in 2015. Because the APA site visit took place in December 2015 after the campus' self-study application was approved, and because accreditation is retroactive to the date of the site visit; students who have already graduated from the program are considered to have graduated from an APA accredited Program.
"Both acceptance of the initial application, and graduation of a program's first cohort under an accredited program are rare," said Milton Fuentes, Psy.D., department chair, Clinical Psy.D. Program. "We are proud to be counted among the few."
"Congratulations to Campus Dean Dr. Heather Sheets, Department Chair Dr. Milton Fuentes, the program faculty, and the students! Having achieved accreditation for our Clinical Psychology Program speaks to the excellent curriculum and training developed by the accomplished faculty. Everything we do at the University is about our students. I am so proud of, and delighted for, our Clinical Doctoral students at the D.C. Campus. This accreditation outcome is a true reflection of their hard work and persistence," remarked Michele Nealon-Woods, Psy.D., president, The Chicago School.
The Clinical Psy.D. Program on TCSPP's Chicago Campus also achieved APA accreditation several years ago, and has graduated more than 1400 students to date, including Dr. Nealon-Woods and Dr. Sheets.
