LOS ANGELES, March 2, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- 2020 Mom (http://www.2020mom.org/), formerly the California Maternal Mental Health Collaborative, a 501c3 non-profit organization, announced today that The California Endowment (http://www.calendow.org) approved a $100,000 grant to fund the study of maternal mental health care in California and build additional coalitions to address maternal mental health in the state's Central Valley region.

According to a recent study published in JAMA Psychiatry, approximately one in seven women in the U.S. will suffer from a maternal mental health disorder, such as Postpartum Depression. Most are never diagnosed or treated.
"The mental health of mothers is fundamental to the well-being of families and communities. We are proud to be supporting this work in California," said Marisol Avina, Program Manager.
The funding comes after 2020 Mom worked with the California legislative women's caucus to pass Assembly Concurrent Resolution, 148. The resolution calls for the formation of a task force to study the current state of maternal mental health services. The task force will document its findings and produce recommendations in December of 2015.
The Central Valley Health Policy Institute will be leading the research and project management associated with the state-wide task force with the support of 2020 Mom. 2020 Mom also will invest in building and expanding community coalitions starting in the Central Valley, one of the poorest regions in the nation.
Additional funding is still necessary to convene the task force, so 2020 Mom urges other funders to follow the lead of The California Endowment and invest in this important work.
