The Brooklyn Hospital Center Receives $25 Million Grant from New York State Department of Health to Modernize Emergency Department and Improve Patient Access to Quality Medical Care
BROOKLYN, N.Y., Aug. 1, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Gary G. Terrinoni, President and Chief Executive Officer of The Brooklyn Hospital Center, announced the hospital received a $25 million grant from the New York State Department of Health to expand and upgrade its emergency department facilities.
The Brooklyn Hospital Center (TBHC) received the largest award for any New York City health provider as part of The Statewide Health Care Facility Transformation Program (SHCFTP) TBHC officials said.
"This grant will enable TBHC to continue our historic mission of providing the community with the best quality emergency services available as we move forward with keeping Brooklyn healthy," Terrinoni said.
The renovation of the emergency department is a key building block of TBHC's ambulatory care expansion plans. The emergency department will be modernized and enlarged to accommodate the current volume and projected visits in the near future.
"The funding award is another example that our essential role in the Brooklyn community as a 'critical healthcare provider' is integral to the success of the continued development of Downtown Brooklyn," Terrinoni said. "We have sought statewide support from the halls of Albany to local community leaders at our annual legislative breakfast to deliver the best quality care for our patients."
The $25 million grant award comes as TBHC recently earned The American Heart Association/American Stroke Association's Get With The Guidelines® (GWTG) Heart Failure and Stroke Gold Plus Quality Achievement Awards for its best medical practices for stroke and heart care. In addition, U.S. News & World Report named TBHC a top-performing hospital for heart failure care.
Terrinoni said, "TBHC's National Quality, Brooklyn Address campaign says it all: top quality care delivered locally. As our recognition for delivering quality care continues to grow nationally we are excited to move forward with the additional state financial resources to serve our community, build a better hospital and keep Brooklyn healthy."
Joan Clark, TBHC's Senior Vice President for Strategic Planning, Marketing & Communications, External Affairs, said that TBHC serves as the primary hospital for residents in the local communities of North-Central Brooklyn. The hospital's expansion and long-term sustainability is critical to local residents, she said.
Leroy Charles, TBHC's Vice President for External Affairs, lauded the efforts of elected officials, community leaders and corporate partners who have championed TBHC's capital infrastructure improvement needs.
"We want to thank all those who continue to advocate for TBHC," Charles said. "We particularly want to thank Governor Andrew M. Cuomo and The New York State Health Commissioner Dr. Howard Zucker for their vision and commitment to delivering valuable healthcare resources to serve the greater Brooklyn community."
Charles also commended the efforts and support of Deputy Secretary for Health and Human Services Paul Francis, Special Assistant to the Governor Drew Gabriel, Congressman Hakeem Jeffries, State Senator Marty Golden, State Senator Velmanette Montgomery, Assemblyman Walter Mosely, Assemblywoman Jo Anne Simon, Assemblyman Joseph Lentol, Councilwoman Laurie Cumbo, Public Advocate Letitia James and Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams.
