BOSTON, Sept. 12, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- The Boston Architectural College (BAC) is pleased to announce its fall exhibition, The Landscape Architecture of Lawrence Halprin, a traveling photographic exhibition created by The Cultural Landscape Foundation (TCLF). The exhibition will run from September 12- November 17, 2018.
The Landscape Architecture of Lawrence Halprin is about the life and work of landscape architect Lawrence Halprin (1916-2009), organized on the 100th anniversary of the year of his birth. Halprin was among the foremost landscape architects of the twentieth century. His prolific career spanned more than five decades, with highlights that include the Franklin Delano Roosevelt Memorial (Washington, D.C.), Freeway Park (Seattle, WA), the Portland Open Space Sequence (Portland, OR), and San Francisco's Ghirardelli Square. His firm was a seedbed for many talented designers now celebrated in their own right, and the innovative techniques he pioneered forever changed the field of landscape architecture.
"We are thrilled to host this exhibition celebrating the life and work of legendary landscape architect Lawrence Halprin," says BAC President Glen LeRoy, FAIA, FAICP. "Landscape architects are leaders in the design of the natural and urban environment. This exhibition by The Cultural Landscape Foundation will vividly demonstrate the work and legacy of Lawrence Halprin, and educate audiences about landscape architecture."
"We are pleased to partner again with The Boston Architectural College, which is a leader in elevating the visibility and discourse about design and its impact," said Charles A. Birnbaum, TCLF's president & CEO. "The Halprin exhibition demonstrates how landscape architecture has been instrumental in shaping the public realm."
The exhibition features newly commissioned contemporary photographs of Halprin's work. A full color printed gallery guide accompanies the exhibition with information about each of the sites, and there is a complementary online exhibition with additional photography and links to a video oral history with Halprin.
The exhibition opens and closes with images underscoring the importance of preserving Halprin's work. The Cultural Landscape Foundation mounts these exhibitions in order to make visible the often invisible hand of the landscape architect, and also to demonstrate the fragility of a practitioner's unique design legacy.
The Landscape Architecture of Lawrence Halprin will be on exhibition at The Boston Architectural College's McCormick Gallery September 12-November 17, 2018. Charles A. Birnbaum will present a special lecture, Lawrence Halprin and his Legacy: Strategies for Making it Visible, Instilling Value and Empowering Stewards to "Take Part", at the BAC on Wednesday, October 10, 2018, at 6 pm. Charles's lecture is free and open to the public. The Landscape Architecture of Lawrence Halprin exhibition is open daily, and free to visit.
