WASHINGTON, May 6 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- ThanksUSA announced today that The Boeing Company will provide $25,000 in college scholarships to the spouses and dependents of active-duty military through ThanksUSA's scholarship program. For the second year in a row, a total of eight Boeing/ThanksUSA scholarships will be awarded, with six for engineering students and two for political-science majors.
"We are so thankful for Boeing's continued support of ThanksUSA's military family scholarship program," said Michele Stork, executive director of ThanksUSA. "We've expanded our program for 2010 to cover additional forms of academic training, and Boeing's generous donation will help us to meet the various educational needs of military families."
ThanksUSA began in 2005 when two Virginia schoolgirls sought to mobilize Americans to thank active-duty troops for defending our freedoms. Since 2006, ThanksUSA has awarded nearly $6 million in need-based, post-secondary scholarships to almost 2,000 spouses and children of military members serving on active-duty status. Scholarships have been awarded in all 50 states and the District of Columbia to families representing all branches of the Armed Forces, including the National Guard and Reserves, and the families of the wounded and fallen.
"Boeing is committed to supporting America's men and women in uniform and partnering with ThanksUSA provides an additional means for us to thank them and their families," said Jack Catton, Boeing vice president for Combat Air Force Systems. "We're honored to help fund these scholarships for the men, women and children who sacrifice so much for our country."
Boeing also provides scholarships to historically black colleges and minority institutions and awards scholarships to children of Boeing employees who are chosen as National Merit Scholarship winners.
