The Associated Press and Corbis Images Combine Collective Strengths to Provide an Unparalleled Media Offering to Customers
Arrangement is a "perfect marriage" of editorial and creative imagery for customers
SEATTLE, Aug. 23, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- The Associated Press (www.ap.org) and Corbis Images (www.corbisimages.com) announced a comprehensive cross-distribution partnership today that provides customers unprecedented access to more than 10 million images covering an unparalleled range of breaking news, sports and entertainment, archival and creative images.
The strategic alliance combines the strengths of two of the world's leading organizations for compelling and authoritative imagery globally. AP Images, the commercial photo licensing division of The Associated Press, will make available thousands of breaking news, sports, and entertainment images each day and more than 5 million archival photos. AP, a not-for-profit cooperative headquartered in New York, has won 30 Pulitzer Prizes for its photography. Corbis, a privately held company based in Seattle, will make available more than 5 million of its world-leading collection of creative, documentary, archival, fine art and current events imagery. Together, AP and Corbis will provide the market the most comprehensive, end-to-end editorial offering available today across all subjects and industry verticals.
"Putting together AP's award-winning collection of breaking news and other editorial photography with Corbis' extraordinary collection of creative and historical imagery provides a perfect marriage of choice for our customers," said Tom Curley, AP president and CEO. "It means unprecedented access to the most far-reaching, complete collections available anywhere."
"Corbis believes in the future of the media business, and our partnership with The Associated Press marks another major milestone in our company's commitment to providing customers with the most compelling and differentiated content offering in the market today," said Corbis' CEO, Gary Shenk. "Corbis now provides not only the broadest selection of breaking news, sports and entertainment content, but an unparalleled collection of archival imagery spanning the entire history of photography."
Corbis has traditionally led the industry in advertising, commercial and archival images, while The Associated Press is the industry leader in breaking news, sports and entertainment, and an archival news photo collection dating back more than 90 years. Under the agreement, Corbis images will be available on AP Images' portal, www.apimages.com, and AP photographs will be available on the Corbis website at www.corbisimages.com. These collections will be available on the two sites beginning in early October to customers in the United States.
