"The Andrews Team" Among Finalists for the Public Justice Foundation 2016 'Trial Lawyer of the Year' Award
The Public Justice Foundation has announced the finalists for its "Trial Lawyer of the Year Award," which includes the plaintiff's attorneys who successfully represented wronged workers in Andrews v. Lawrence Livermore National Security.
SAN JOSE, Calif., June 14, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Gwilliam Ivary Chiosso Cavalli & Brewer and Habbas & Associates ("The Andrews Team") are among five finalists for the 2016 Trial Lawyer of the Year Award. This award is presented by the Public Justice Foundation and seeks to acknowledge attorneys who contribute to public interest by litigating or settling cases with social and economic significance.
Members of The Andrews Team are finalists for their achievement in Andrews v. Lawrence Livermore National Security. The case dealt with the privatization of a national security laboratory, which caused decades of information, knowledge, and experience to leave the lab when it laid off workers.
Facing a 1,200-member troop of attorneys from Lawrence Livermore Labs, The Andrews Team challenged Lawrence Livermore Labs in a seven-year legal battle.
After innumerable interviews, more than 100 depositions, and 2 trials lasting 60 days each, The Andrews Team got a settlement worth $37.25 million. When the defense demanded a confidential settlement, the Andrews Team stated the information was public knowledge because taxpayers are entitled to know where their tax money goes.
The Andrews Team is comprised of Robert J. Schwartz, Randall E. Strauss, and J. Gary Gwilliam, from Gwilliam Ivary Chiosso Cavalli & Brewer and Omar Habbas of Habbas & Associates.
The Public Justice Foundation is a not-for-profit organization that supports legal professionals who hope to combat social injustice, protect the Earth, and challenge abuse from corporations and government agencies.
The award will be presented at the Trial Lawyer of the Year Award Dinner on July 24, 2016 in Los Angeles. Habbas & Associates is grateful for the opportunity to participate in this case with Gwilliam Ivary Chiosso Cavalli & Brewer and looks forward to continuing its work in socially significant cases.
