The American Fertility Association, Along with Brooklyn Community Pride Center and California Cryobank, Presents Family Building Seminar for Lesbians
NEW YORK, Jan. 9, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- The American Fertility Association (The AFA), in association with California Cryobank, announced today a free seminar about family building for the lesbian community.
The Family Planning Panel will take place on Thursday, January 31st, from 6:00 PM – 8:00 PM at The Brooklyn Community Pride Center, 310 Atlantic Avenue, Brooklyn, New York.
Critical information about choosing a sperm donor, at home insemination, medical support, and legal aspects will be explored in a relaxed, conversational way.
"As the only inclusive national fertility association, we're honored to host this event in collaboration with California Cryobank," said Ken Mosesian, Executive Director of The AFA. He continued, "The timing of the event, coming shortly after the Topeka, KS case compelling a sperm donor to pay child support to a separated lesbian couple, emphasizes the need for hopeful lesbian parents to educate themselves and to take appropriate action."
Corey Whelan, Program Director of The AFA, stated, "Early on in our work of advocating for the LGBT community, The American Fertility Association identified a knowledge-gap about the medical and legal ramifications of inseminating at home amongst lesbians. There is an urgent need for more education about state laws governing third party reproduction. For those wishing to conceive healthy babies who are kept safe from the effects of litigation, knowledge is power. We look forward to bringing this information to individuals who need it at our next Family Planning Panel and Discussion in collaboration with the Brooklyn Community Pride Center."
"Finding a sperm donor, selecting an insemination procedure, and protecting both parents' legal rights can all have significant long-term financial, medical, and emotional impact on a lesbian family," stated Scott Brown, Director of Client Experience & Communications at California Cryobank, who will also be speaking at the event. Scott further stated, "California Cryobank is proud to be a part of this incredibly important evening of family building education and support."
Though the evening is focused on the lesbian community, family, friends, and supporters are encouraged to attend. A light meal will be served, and gift bags with educational content will be given to all participants.
The event is free, but reservations are requested. Please call Corey Whelan at 718-853.1411 or email [email protected].
