The AGIS CEO With a Steely Determination to Succeed

CEO of Al Ghurair Iron & Steel (AGIS), Abu Bucker Husain was celebrating this week after winning two leadership awards from Business Worldwide Magazine (BWM).

Husain took the title of Best CEO Steel and Metals Industry 2016 - Middle East along with that of Growth Strategy CEO of the Year 2016 - UAE.

The Boston University School of Management graduate currently heads up AGIS - a leading producer and supplier of high-quality steel materials, such as hot dipped galvanised coils and sheets, for the construction industry in the UAE. These are used for air condition ducting, cable trays, cold-formed sections and expanded mesh, as well as for purlins in pre-engineered buildings.

Prior to joining AGIS Husain was a Management Associate at American International Group Inc in Wall Street, New York before being appointed CFO of that company's subsidiary unit six years later. He took over the running of AGIS in 2007.

Husain said: "I'm honoured to have received not one but two awards from the magazine. It hasn't been an easy time of late in the Gulf, due to the crash in oil prices and the Chinese economic slowdown.

"However, we began the business at the start of the global recession and survived so we're confident about the quality of our products and overall ability to succeed in the face of adversity."

He attributes AGIS's success to three distinct factors - quality, sustainability and safety. In terms of quality, the company is meticulous about the standard of the material it receives, its own final output, and business practices in general.
Meanwhile, pollution control devices, inbuilt recycling and an effluent treatment plant for waste water allows AGIS management to list sustainability as a priority.
And finally, the company's safety record is exemplary. For instance, they regularly organise general health checkups for all employees and audiometric testing for staff exposed to high noise levels.
Husain added: "We're very pleased with the way the company is going and have further plans to expand our production from 200,000 to 400,000 tons of galvanized steel per annum in the short term. Watch this space…"
