CHICAGO, June 13, 2016 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The AES Corporation (AES) today received the Edison Electric Institute's (EEI's) 2016 International Edison Award, the electric power industry's most prestigious honor. A panel of former electric company chief executives selected AES for the annual award from a group of distinguished finalists.
AES earned the International Edison Award for its Advancion® 4 energy storage technology, which was first deployed in 2015. The next-generation battery-based energy storage system was designed to accelerate the growth and integration of clean energy and to serve as an alternative to new peaker power plants. It is the first-ever battery-based energy storage solution designed to scale in size, and it is already in service making the energy grid smarter and more resilient in the Netherlands, Northern Ireland, and the United States. By the end of 2016, AES will have deployed energy storage projects in six countries.
"The AES energy storage system is a great example of how electric power companies are using new and inventive solutions to provide cost-effective clean energy to customers globally," said EEI President Tom Kuhn. "By working directly with electric power companies, power producers, grid operators, and industrial customers to develop its Advancion platform, AES has also demonstrated the value that technology partnerships can bring to the electric power industry."
AES determined that the energy storage solutions available globally were not designed to scale fast enough to meet the anticipated growth in storage, and quickly began developing an effective technology solution to meet the rapidly growing demand.
"The AES team is greatly deserving of the Edison Award for their efforts to develop smarter, stronger energy grids around the world," said Kuhn.
