The 35 Best U.S. Cities for People 35 and Under
Vocativ Uses Deep Web Technology to Analyze Job Markets, Cost of Living and Other Key Lifestyle Metrics to Determine Most Livable Cities for People in Their 20s and 30s
NYC Ranks No. 1 in Vocativ's 2014 Livability Index
NEW YORK, Dec. 9, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- The digital media company Vocativ today announced the publication of its second annual Livability Index, which uses the company's open-source data analysis technology to rank the 35 best U.S. cities for people 35 and under.
This year, New York City won the top spot in the ranking, taking over from Portland, Oregon, which fell nine places to number 10. The Livability Index uses Vocativ's proprietary technology to scour high-quality, under-the-radar data about the 100 most populous cities in America to determine the 35 best locations for millennials to live and work.
Vocativ analyzed metrics that are pivotal to anyone weighing a move, such as the strength of the local job market, housing costs, crime rates, public transportation and weather. But the Livability Index also gives weight to a number of lifestyle factors that are equally important to people in their 20s and 30s, such as number of singles, racial diversity, LGBTQ-friendliness, cost of Wi-Fi, walkability, availability of takeout food and price of marijuana. In all, Vocativ ran 26 individual data sets across eight categories.
"While traditional journalism is about calling sources, new journalism is about calling APIs," says Mati Kochavi, founder of Vocativ. "We are investing in cutting-edge technology that lets us listen to the world in new and creative ways. The result is reporting that is based on the surprises—data, people, trends—that our technology reveals."
Says Scott Cohen, Vocativ CEO: "Despite New York's sky-high real estate market, it's hardly a shock to see NYC take the top spot in our ranking. It has a strong and varied job market, the country's top public transportation system, racial diversity that rivals that of the U.N., amazing food options and more entertainment choices than YouTube. What did surprise us was Texas scoring a whopping nine cities in the top 35. But with a booming economy, cheap housing and utilities—especially gasoline—and tons of young singles, it dominates our Livability Index. All of which give Rick Perry some early 2016 talking points."
The top 10 cities according to Vocativ's Livability Index:
- New York, New York
- Arlington, Texas
- San Francisco, California
- Denver, Colorado
- Austin, Texas
- Minneapolis, Minnesota
- Seattle, Washington
- Saint Paul, Minnesota
- Madison, Wisconsin
- Portland, Oregon
The complete rankings are available at Vocativ.com/livability. The index further breaks down livability into eight categories:

- Food: Washington, D.C., ranks No. 1
