ThanksUSA Receives Washington Nationals "Spirit Award" for Supporting Military Families
Thousands Raised for Scholarships Benefitting Military Children and Spouses
MCLEAN, Va., Sept. 22, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- ThanksUSA, the national nonprofit dedicated to thanking America's troops through the gift of education, received this week the Washington Nationals Spirit Award. The prize, which was announced at Nationals Park on September 18, National Air Force Day in the U.S., recognizes accomplishments that reflect the Nationals' spirit of giving and community and comes as ThanksUSA marks its 10th anniversary.
Game-night attendance and additional contributions by employees of tax, audit and advisory firm KPMG and its supporting company teammates resulted in a contribution of $15,000.00 to ThanksUSA's scholarship fund.
"The KPMG family is honored to help our military families through the gift of education," said KPMG Partner and ThanksUSA Board Member Patty St. George. "Our servicemen and women put their lives on the line every day. This is our way of showing gratitude."
Appearing during the pre-game Spirit Award announcement and salute from fans were:
- Bob Okun, ThanksUSA CEO and Chair
- Jennifer Benecke, ThanksUSA scholarship recipient, Navy husband Chief Petty Officer George Benecke, their ten-year old, son Dominick, and his eight-year old friend, George Brennan
- Patty St. George, KPMG Partner and ThanksUSA Board Member
The special occasion featured the debut of ThanksUSA's new public service announcement on Nats HD. Dominick Benecke and George Brennan also held the finish-line tape for the famed Presidents Race.
"Ten years after its launch, ThanksUSA is proud to have provided post-secondary scholarships valued at more than $11 million to more than 3,700 children and spouses of our Armed Services," said ThanksUSA CEO and chairman Bob Okun. "These families deserve our gratitude for their sacrifice and service. What better way to say 'thank you' than to help them expand their opportunities through education? We look forward to the next ten years of giving back to those to have given us so much."
