ThanksUSA Continues Partnership with Folds of Honor to Award Scholarships to Military Families
WASHINGTON, Aug. 10, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- ThanksUSA, a charitable effort to mobilize Americans to "thank" our active-duty troops through need-based scholarships, last Friday awarded 300 scholarships totaling nearly $1 million to the spouses and children of active-duty military for the 2011 scholarship season.
ThanksUSA continues its partnership with the Folds of Honor Foundation, and thanks to a $190,000 contribution from Folds of Honor and a matching $190,000 contribution from ThanksUSA, 125 of those scholarships worth $3,000 each will be awarded to children and spouses of wounded or killed-in-action veterans. The Folds of Honor Foundation provides post-secondary educational scholarships for children and spouses of military service men and women killed or disabled while serving in the armed forces.
"We are thrilled to be awarding another 300 scholarships this year to the deserving families of our men and women in uniform with the tremendous help of Folds of Honor," said Michele Stork, executive director of ThanksUSA. "We truly appreciate the generosity of our corporate donors and partners; we're honored that they have chosen to contribute to our scholarship program and support America's armed forces."
ThanksUSA and Folds of Honor began working together in 2009 to support the educational needs of military families. Today, the relationship between the two groups continues to grow, with Folds of Honor serving as one the largest contributors to ThanksUSA's scholarship program.
"We are honored to work with ThanksUSA and support our military families by providing post-secondary scholarships. Working together, we are honoring and empowering those families who have sacrificed so much," said Major Dan Rooney, founder of the Folds of Honor Foundation.
ThanksUSA began in 2005 when two Virginia schoolgirls set out to mobilize Americans to thank active-duty troops for defending our freedoms. Since 2006, ThanksUSA has awarded more than $7.5 million in need-based, post-secondary scholarships to nearly 2,500 spouses and children of military members serving on active-duty status. Scholarships have been awarded in all 50 states and the District of Columbia to families representing all branches of the Armed Forces, including the National Guard and Reserves, and the families of the wounded and fallen.
