ThanksUSA Announces New Board Members
America's First Female Four-Star General Among the Luminaries
MCLEAN, Va., July 7, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- ThanksUSA, the national non-profit organization dedicated to thanking America's troops through the gift of education, announced today the election of four new members to its Board of Directors. They will join other prominent national leaders supporting the organization's education efforts for military families.
Among the new members is retired U.S. Army general Ann E. Dunwoody. Dunwoody, who retired from the military in 2012 after 38 years in uniform, was the first woman in U.S. military and uniformed service history to achieve a four-star officer rank. A college-ranked tennis player, she is also involved in promoting ThanksUSA's Tennis Thanks the Troops campaign in association with the United States Professional Tennis Association.
"I loved being a soldier, and I loved the Army, and I am so appreciative of organizations like ThanksUSA that reach out to our men and women who serve and their families," said Dunwoody on becoming a ThanksUSA board member. "I am proud to be joining a roster of people who recognize our military's sacrifices and are intent on ensuring their families' quality of life is enhanced by a good education."
Other notable individuals joining the Board include Suzie Kovner, co-chairman of The Kovner Foundation; J. Andrew Don, senior vice president and chief financial officer of the National Rural Utilities Cooperative Finance Corporation; and Rhett Butler, vice president of sales for Intelligent Decisions.
"These individuals reflect the compassion and dedication to military families that are the foundation of ThanksUSA's mission – providing the gift of education to the children and spouses of our service men and women," said Bob Okun, the charity's chairman and CEO. "Through ThanksUSA scholarships, Americans are expressing their profound gratitude for the sacrifices of our military families."
This year, ThanksUSA celebrates its tenth anniversary providing need-based college, technical and vocational school scholarships. Since the charity's inception, nearly 3,400 children and spouses of our military have received scholarships, valued at more than $10 million.
