Texas Woman's University offers 20 new "future business owner" student scholarships this fall

DENTON, Texas, April 18, 2016 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Texas Woman's University's new center for women in business today announced it will offer 20 new scholarships of up to $6,500 each for incoming first-year students from anywhere in the country who wish to open a business in Texas. This annual scholarship, which can be used for tuition and fees, is renewable for up to four years if the new center's annual extracurricular requirements are met.

"We are looking to help achieve Governor Greg Abbott's goal of making Texas No. 1 for women-owned businesses," said Tina Mims, executive director of the new center, which is the first of its kind focused on women entrepreneurs at any university in Texas. "We believe these new scholarships will encourage students to think about designing their college education from day one around their desire for the independence of business ownership in Texas."

Mims said students can pursue any academic program offered at TWU's Denton campus, but they must complete the center's required extracurricular activities in addition to their degree plan requirements. She and her colleagues anticipate a gamut of business interests — from students who want to create and own their own software companies, health-related clinics or creative services agencies to others who seek to create new restaurants, dance and art studios, physical therapy practices or retail shops.

Students applying for the scholarship must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents, have a minimum high school cumulative GPA of 3.0, an ACT score of 24 or an SAT score of 1090 or higher. Those with business ownership experience also are strongly encouraged to apply. Participating in this scholarship program will enable these incoming students to receive business certification in innovation, develop a business plan, receive one-on-one coaching and participate in specialized training.

Students who want to apply for this new scholarship must write a short essay about themselves and their motivation for business ownership. Applicants must articulate why women's business ownership is important for the growth of Texas and beyond. Students also must include a description of the business they would like to pursue, and why they believe it can succeed. If their application is accepted, they will be notified about a face-to-face screening process with a panel of judges.

To apply, students must apply to the university first and set up their account to enter into the scholarship application system, which requires a TWU portal ID and password. Then, students should log into the TWU scholarship system at https://twu.academicworks.com/ and search for the Center for Women in Business scholarship. The scholarship application and essay documents are easy to upload. In 2015, Gov. Abbott approved $2.2 million to create a new center at TWU to provide women with more of the tools needed to succeed in creating successful new businesses.
