Texas' Stop-Sale System Achieves Significant Results In Battle Against Meth
Electronic Technology Blocks Illegal Sales, Allows Legal Ones
LUTHERVILLE, Md., July 17, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- The National Association of Drug Diversion Investigators (NADDI) – a nonprofit organization that facilitates cooperation between law enforcement, healthcare professionals, state regulatory agencies and pharmaceutical manufacturers in the prevention and investigation of drug diversion – today lauded the latest results achieved by the real-time, stop-sale system in Texas. Data released for 2012 by the National Precursor Log Exchange (NPLEx) shows electronic technology in the Lone Star State during the first six months of 2012 blocked the sale of more than 82,000 boxes of medicine containing pseudoephedrine (PSE) preventing more than 209,000 grams from potentially being diverted by meth criminals.
"In six short months since Texas' real-time, stop-sale technology became fully operational, the system is proving to be an invaluable resource for law enforcement officials around the state," said Charles F. Cichon, executive director of the National Association of Drug Diversion Investigators (NADDI). "The technology allows retailers to block unlawful attempted purchases right at the point of sale and provides police officers with critical information on their smart phones and other mobile devices. By targeting criminals, NPLEx ensures that responsible Texans will continue to have access to the safe and effective medicines they rely on for relief from cold and allergy symptoms."
