Texas Mutual Awards $400K in Annual Safety Education Grants to Texas Colleges

AUSTIN, Texas, Feb. 17, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Texas Mutual Insurance Company has awarded a combined $400,000 in grants to Kilgore College, Midland College, College of the Mainland in Texas City and Del Mar College in Corpus Christi. The grants fund free workplace safety courses for employers, employees and the general public through the colleges' risk management institutes.

Since 1999, Texas Mutual—the state's leading provider of workers' compensation insurance—has awarded $3.9 million in safety education grants, and approximately 30,000 students have attended free safety courses in Kilgore, Midland, Texas City and Corpus Christi over the past 16 years.

"We continue to be grateful for this partnership between Texas Mutual and Kilgore College, which has helped educate many East Texas employees," Dr. Bill Holda, Kilgore College president, said. "The safety training provided through the institute is a valuable resource for our community and helps local industry professionals prevent injuries on the job and possibly save lives."

Courses at the safety institutes include general topics, such as ergonomic safety and OSHA standards, as well as courses tailored to the dominant industries in the Houston, Midland, Kilgore and Corpus Christi areas. Last year, Del Mar College launched its safety institute with an initiative on safety training for school bus drivers and city bus drivers, and plans to eventually expand the program to include small and mid-size businesses.
