Texas Lawyer Responds To NHTSA's Announcement
CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas, May 16, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Bob Hilliard, a Texas lawyer and one of the nation's key players in the pursuit of claims against GM, responds to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's announcement today that it will fine GM $35 Million for delaying the recall of 2.6 million vehicles for ignition switch defects.
FINE IS NOT ENOUGH
Hilliard, who has filed personal injury lawsuits against GM across the country, states, "$35 million is pennies in a fountain. Less then 1% of GM's total net worth and cash on hand. NHTSA has always been seen as a toothless tiger - a joke inside the walls of the big car companies. This a complete victory for GM and another stain on this shameful agency!"
"NHTSA, by its actions today, refuses to learn from its history with major car companies. Fines do not work when GM, with $30 billion cash on hand, can throw money at the agency - while at the same time tell its customers these defective cars are safe to drive. NHTSA needs to speak on behalf of the memories of my clients' loved ones. At least 60 lives have been lost and over 600 shattering and permanent and life changing injuries have occurred as a result of these defective cars. NHTSA needs to order these defective cars parked now."
"When you levy a monetary fine against a company that makes billions of dollars a year, you do not compel compliance. You promote and prop up the existing problem."
NHTSA NEEDS SHARPER TEETH
"To date I have been hired to investigate over 60 deaths and 600 serious injuries - each accident is defect related. GM made the decision to build defective cars and bury the truth while my clients were burying their loved ones - but GM knew it could get away with it as there was no real policing by the agency watchdog."
