Texas Health Resources, Duncan family and SIM USA announce endowed scholarship to train physicians, nurses and physician assistants in Liberia
Nancy and David Writebol share their experience of service in Liberia
ARLINGTON, Texas, May 4, 2015 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Members of the family of Thomas Eric Duncan joined Texas Health Resources, and SIM USA, an international mission organization serving in more than 65 countries, to announce the Thomas Eric Duncan Endowed Scholarship to help educate future doctors, nurses and physician assistants in Liberia, Mr. Duncan's home country. Today's announcement at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Dallas represents the commitment made when Texas Health and representatives of the Duncan family amicably resolved issues related to Mr. Duncan's treatment at Texas Health Dallas for Ebola Virus Disease last year.
Texas Health Resources donated $125,000 as seed funding for the scholarship which will be administered by SIM.
Mr. Duncan's mother Nowai Gartay Korkoyah, father Jacob B. Duncan, sister Tupee Garsinii, nephew Josephus Weeks, and son Charles Amos Duncan participated in the announcement, which was attended by employees of Texas Health Dallas, physicians and special guests from the community.
Representatives from SIM USA included George Salloum, vice president and chief of staff, David Writebol, SIM's director of mission for Liberia, and Nancy Writebol, SIM missionary who contracted EVD while working in Liberia. Mrs. Writebol returned to the U.S. for treatment and recovered from the disease. She and husband David have continued their work in Liberia and returned to the U.S. to participate in the announcement and help raise funds for the scholarship and SIM's missionary work.
