NEW YORK, Jan. 15, 2015 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- As hundreds of testosterone lawsuits (http://www.testosteronelawsuithub.com/ ) move forward in federal court, Bernstein Liebhard LLP notes the publication of a new study which suggests certain men who use prescription testosterone replacement therapies may face an increased risk of heart attacks compared to men who do not use the medications. The study, which was published in Pharmacotherapy on January 13th, looked at data on nearly 1 million men from ages 45-80. The authors of the report concluded that first-time users of testosterone treatments were 41% more likely to have a myocardial infarction, or heart attack. While the authors of the study wrote that the absolute risk was low, they did characterize the risk seen among first-time users as statistically significant.*
"The publication of this study comes as hundreds of men pursue testosterone lawsuits after suffering heart attacks, strokes, blood clots and other cardiovascular problems allegedly associated with their use of low testosterone therapies. It is also the latest of several studies to point to a link between the use of these drugs and an increased risk of certain heart problems in some patient populations," says Bernstein Liebhard LLP, a nationwide law firm representing victims of defective drugs and medical devices. The Firm continues to offer free case reviews to men who may have been harmed by AndroGel, Axiron, Testim and other low testosterone treatments.
Testosterone Lawsuits
On January 31, 2014, the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) revealed that it was investigating the cardiovascular side effects potentially associated with low testosterone therapies after two studies suggested their use was associated with an increased risk of heart attack, stroke and death in certain men. These studies included research that was published in November 2013 in the Journal of the American Medical System which reported an increased risk of heart attack, stroke and death among older men with pre-existing heart problems. A second study, which was published in PLOS One in January 2014, reported that such treatments were associated with a doubling of the heart attack risk among younger men with pre-existing heart problems, and in men over 65 regardless of their heart health.
Since then, hundreds of men have filed testosterone lawsuits in state and federal court that seek compensation for heart attacks and other cardiovascular problems allegedly related to the use of the medications. Court documents indicate that more than 600 such claims have been filed in a federal multidistrict litigation now underway in U.S. District Court, Northern District of Illinois. Among other things, plaintiffs allege that the manufacturers of the medications knowingly concealed their heart risks from the public, and failed to warn doctors and patients about the potential for these complications. The lawsuits also claim healthy men were induced to use low testosterone treatments by misleading marketing claims that positioned the drugs as effective remedies for symptoms associated with male aging. (In re: Testosterone Replacement Therapy Product Liability Litigation - MDL No. 2545)
Since the FDA issued its communication on testosterone therapies last January, a panel of agency advisors has recommended that the drugs' labels be revised to make clear they have not been shown to lessen symptoms associated with male aging, such as low sex drive, fatigue, and muscle loss. They also recommended that the manufacturers of testosterone replacement therapies be required to conduct studies of their cardiovascular side effects.
Men who allegedly suffered heart attacks, strokes, deep vein thrombosis, pulmonary embolism or other cardiovascular problems allegedly associated with testosterone replacement drugs may be entitled to compensation for their injury-related damages.
