Background about Terror Behind the Walls:
Since 1991, more than 1000 volunteers, employees, contractors, and corporate partners have helped make Eastern State Penitentiary's annual Halloween fundraiser, Terror Behind the Walls, one of the largest and most sophisticated haunted attractions in the country.
While the event has changed during the past two decades, the reason Eastern State Penitentiary runs the event has remained the same. The first event was held Halloween evening in 1991 to raise funds to open the penitentiary for daytime historic tours. Today, Terror Behind the Walls is the single largest source of revenue for Eastern State Penitentiary Historic Site, Inc. and has helped run public programming and preservation efforts at the National Historic Landmark.
