DALLAS, Oct. 21, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- PARTNERS User Group Conference -- To help organizations realize the benefits of in-memory technology at a cost-effective price, Teradata (NYSE: TDC), the leading analytic data platforms, applications and services company, today heralded its newest and most versatile appliance - Teradata Data Warehouse Appliance 2750. This Appliance seamlessly integrates an enterprise warehouse with in-memory technology to offer customers fast access to their analytics without the burden of a second appliance.

The Teradata Data Warehouse Appliance, with Teradata Intelligent Memory and the latest Teradata Database, delivers up to three times system-wide performance improvement out-of- the-box, as compared to the 2690 platform. In addition, real world deployments that leverage the new Teradata Database features have shown a 700 times performance response time improvement.
There is now an industry-wide drive to adopt in-memory technology and some organizations are considering separate in-memory appliances. However, this approach creates a wide spectrum of issues related to compatibility, rewriting applications, multiple copies of data, network communications, the need for human intervention, extra ETL (Extract Transform, Load) processing, and software version control.
"The Teradata Data Warehouse Appliance provides the best of all worlds – it combines an enterprise warehouse with an in-memory solution. It is ideal for organizations needing an enterprise warehouse, or looking to deliver real time analytics via dashboards," said Scott Gnau, president, Teradata Labs. "By simply adding additional memory and installing our software, the Teradata Data Warehouse Appliance is transformed into a formidable, self-managing in-memory platform that accelerates the delivery of analytics."
Teradata Intelligent Memory™ (link to previous news release, http://www.teradata.com/News-Releases/2013/Teradata-Introduces-First-In-Memory-Technology/) is seamlessly integrated into the new Appliance. It automatically places the hottest, most frequently used data into memory for the fastest analytic performance. Teradata Intelligent Memory never requires that changes be made to applications, SQL queries, or how the data is stored. Teradata offers customers the benefits of data analytics on data in-memory. Access to data in-memory eliminates disk I/O bottlenecks, query delays, and increases system throughput.
The Data Warehouse Appliance can now support up to two times more memory than the previous appliance for the fastest access to hot, or the most frequently used data. With typical compression rates of three times and leveraging Teradata Columnar technology, data can now be stored in-memory. This supports the growing industry trend of keeping more and more data in-memory for the highest performance and quickest query response time.
All Teradata platforms are enterprise-class, and the Teradata Data Warehouse Appliance is no exception. The Appliance can support the majority of enterprises. It offers robust hardware from industry-leading vendors, full redundancy, mission critical availability, scalability to handle petabytes of data, access for a large number of concurrent users, granular integrated workload management, investment protection, and the ability to handle multiple types of workloads.
Many Teradata customers today are running their businesses on the Teradata Data Warehouse Appliance as their integrated data warehouse. The Teradata Data Warehouse Appliance, by design, is simple to setup, run, and manage. It offers a flexible, easy-to-use, and integrated analytic environment, with unmatched processing speed. It offers enterprise concurrency with hundreds of users for strategic or operational queries. The appliance can scale from seven terabytes to 21 petabytes of customer data to meet the customers' growth needs.
New Technical Features
The Teradata Data Warehouse Appliance is shipped with Teradata Integrated Workload Management (IWM), which delivers best-in-class workload management. Previously, Teradata appliances only included CPU resource management, filters and throttles, but now IWM offers CPU and I/O resource management, flexible classifications, filters, throttles, and tactical, workload groups and timeshare prioritization and exceptions.
With Teradata Database 14.10, the Appliance has many performance enhancements: Teradata Intelligent Memory, improved Teradata Columnar capabilities, industry-leading Integrated Workload Management and Teradata SQL-H™ connectivity to cold or infrequently used data in Hadoop. Hardware improvements include an extended memory space, expanded BYNET® v5 on InfiniBand, and a faster twelve-core processor.
For customers with a Data Warehouse Appliance 2700, upgrade kits are now available to convert the Data Warehouse Appliance 2700 to a Data Warehouse Appliance 2750 for enhanced performance.
The Teradata Data Warehouse Appliance 2750 will be shipped in November 2013.
Unified Data Architecture™ (UDA)
The Teradata Data Warehouse Appliance runs the same Teradata Database, data models, table structures, user views, queries, and load jobs with the same data as other members of the Platform family. These characteristics allow the Platform to fit seamlessly within the Unified Data Architecture™ (UDA), which is a framework for organizations to analyze all types of data on multiple Teradata systems. The Teradata® Unified Data Architecture™ leverages the complementary value of – Teradata Database, Teradata Aster Database, and Apache™ Hadoop®.
