ATLANTA, May 10, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- As a result of their strong academic skills and achievements, extracurricular accomplishments, and potential for success in rigorous college studies, four students will receive prestigious National Merit Scholarships sponsored by Teradata (NYSE: TDC).

"Intellectual curiosity and the desire to learn are key to a successful future, and these students have well exemplified these traits through their work ethic and drive to achieve at the highest level," said Susan Baxley, director of community relations, Teradata Corporation. "By providing tuition assistance to children of Teradata employees, we're able to help them focus on their studies."
To be considered for the scholarship, students first had to earn a qualifying score on the Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test, and then submit a detailed application with an essay and information about extracurricular activities, awards and leadership positions. Nationally, about 15,000 students met the National Merit finalist requirements and about 7,800 finalists were selected by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation to receive scholarships.
Students receiving their 2011 National Merit Scholarships from Teradata are:
- Nicholas Freda, Franklin Regional High School, Murrysville, PA. He is the founder and president of the school's paper recycling program. Freda is a member of a regional youth chorale and his school's band honor guard, and has lettered in varsity swimming for four years. Freda has twice won the outstanding speaker award from Model UN. He intends to study computer science at Penn State University. He is the son of Teradata employee Marianne Jew, a member of the Teradata Certified Professional Program team.
- Nathaniel Higgins, Ponderosa High School, Parker, CO. Higgins is an Eagle Scout, recipient of the National Heroism Award and assistant senior patrol leader with the Boy Scouts of America. He is a member of the National Honor Society as well as the National Thespian Society, and earned school letters in academics and theatre. He is also involved in volunteer work with his church. Higgins wants to major in physics and computer science at Grove City College and become an aerospace engineer. He is the son of Teradata senior computer architect Casey Higgins.
- Aditya Majumdar, Lynbrook High School, San Jose, CA. Majumdar is the National Forensic League speech and debate chapter president for his school and has earned the organization's Academic All-American Award. He is vice president of the National Honor Society chapter and event manager for the school's FIRST Robotics Team. Majumdar plans to major in either chemical engineering or computer science at Columbia University and wants to work in the field of quantum computing. He is the son of Teradata Professional Services partner Tapas Majumdar.
- Sraavya Undurty, Valley High School, West Des Moines, IA. An honor student and Iowa Presidential scholar, she plays violin and piano and is a member of the school chamber orchestra. Undurty volunteers her time as a peer tutor and in the library at a local hospital and serves as a teacher's assistant and accompanist at the Sathya Sai spiritual center. She wants to major in biomedical or medical engineering at the University of Iowa and make a career as a physician. She is the daughter of Bhaskar Undurty, a Teradata database analyst.
