Tennessee's Stop-Sale System Achieves Significant Results In Battle Against Meth

LUTHERVILLE, Md., Aug. 20, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- The National Association of Drug Diversion Investigators (NADDI) today lauded the latest results achieved by the real-time, pseudoephedrine (PSE) blocking system in Tennessee. The system, known as the National Precursor Log Exchange (NPLEx), automatically blocks unlawful pseudoephedrine sales and helps law enforcement officials track down methamphetamine offenders and make arrests. Data released by NPLEx shows electronic technology in Tennessee blocked the sale of more than 17,163 boxes of medicine containing pseudoephedrine during the first seven months of 2014, preventing more than 47,651 grams from potentially being diverted by meth criminals.

Additionally, when compared to the same period in 2013, Tennessee sold 18.13% fewer boxes of PSE and reduced the number of individual purchasers by 13.21%.

Cichon, executive director of NADDI.  "By tracking purchases of medicine containing PSE, NPLEx helps prevent meth cooks from getting the ingredients they need to make this terrible drug. Moreover, this system works in conjunction with the state's drug offender block list – an additional tool that prevents formerly convicted drug criminals from purchasing any medicines containing PSE. Together, these programs have already helped target repeat meth offenders while giving law enforcement officials a much needed advantage in this ongoing fight. As more people become familiar with the extent and benefits of NPLEx, Tennesseans should only expect to see additional progress."
