Ten Latino Vintners from Napa and Sonoma to Present in San Francisco
SAN FRANCISCO, June 7, 2012 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Ten Latino vintners from Napa and Sonoma will be in San Francisco on Thursday, June 21, 2012, to pour and chat with tasters in the beautiful Green Room at the San Francisco War Memorial from 7:00 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. for VINA 2012.
Among them is Vanessa Robledo, a fourth-generation vineyard worker, Owner & CEO of Black Coyote Wines in Napa. Vanessa has been recently honored by the Girls Scouts of America as one of the top 100 Women Greening the Future and her wine has been listed as one of Wine Enthusiasts Top 100 Wines of 2011. She also serves as President of the Ernest A. Bates Foundation which supports educational programs for Hispanic and African American Youth.
Growing up in a Latin family with eight siblings, Vanessa Robledo was always trying to stand out. "I had to overachieve to be noticed," she said. Her success was demonstrated by becoming President of Robledo Family Winery at 24 years old. She managed her family winery from 1997 to 2007 and growing the company from 100 to 20,000 cases, 80% direct to consumer. She joined Black Coyote in 2008 and produces 600 cases of Cabernet Sauvignon.
Ms. Robledo was born in Sonoma and her parents came from Michoacan, Mexico. Her grandfather and other family members came to the U.S. from Michoacan under the Bracero program started during World War II. "My grandfather taught me about vines and I taught him English," she recalled.
"It is important to give back to the people who work the land and farm vineyards by supporting their health. Their contributions are essential for the wine business and all wine drinkers. If it wasn't for the hand labor of the Mexican people the quality of wine growing would not be world class."
This is just one of the stories one can hear by attending VINA and chatting with vintners from Alex Sotelo Cellars, Black Coyote Wines, Ceja Vineyards, Encanto Vineyards, Maldonado Vineyards, Mi Sueno, Renteria Wines, Rios Wine Company, Robledo Family Winery, and Voces.
Admission to VINA is $75; a portion of the proceeds will support Clinic Ole's health fairs for vineyard workers. Visit www.eefsf.org for details.
