Temasys and Citrix bring WebRTC to the enterprise
Temasys' WebRTC plugin pre-installed in GoToMeeting Free on Internet Explorer, Safari browsers
SINGAPORE, May 11, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Temasys, a global startup building the next generation of web communications, has announced that Citrix has licensed its WebRTC plugin for use with GoToMeeting Free, the no-cost voice, video and screen-sharing communications service. The plugin enables Citrix to extend GoToMeeting Free to users of Microsoft's Internet Explorer and Apple's Safari browsers.
As per web analytics firm Net Applications, as of January 2015 Internet Explorer and Safari together account for over 63.2% of the desktop and 45.4% of the mobile and tablet browser market share. By licensing Temasys' plugin, service providers, businesses, application developers and conferencing companies can now extend their enterprise-grade WebRTC services to customers who prefer two of the world's most widely used browsers.
Victor Dronov, Product Manager at Citrix said, "WebRTC holds tremendous potential to transform the way we communicate. Citrix is firmly committed to building industry-leading conferencing solutions. We are pleased to work with Temasys to implement the technology in GoToMeeting Free, tapping on its potential to offer our users a high quality product."
Chip Wilcox, CEO at Temasys said, "Citrix is the latest commercial licensee of Temasys' WebRTC plugin, which enables service providers to rapidly and cost-effectively deploy WebRTC to serve Internet Explorer and Safari users. At a time where there's a positive shift in the conferencing industry's willingness to embrace WebRTC, Citrix is well ahead of the curve to implement the technology, a testament to their legacy of innovativeness."
Temasys' plugins are easy to use and install. Applications check to see if it is installed on the browser, (prompting to download if not), and then use it. Temasys makes this simple by providing a proprietary, modified version of a file called "adapter.js". (Similar to what Google and Mozilla provide, to facilitate interoperability between Chrome and Firefox). Developers need only a few lines of code to have an application work directly on Internet Explorer and Safari. Once the plugin is installed, the WebRTC service can be accessed by Internet Explorer and Safari, just as it would be with the Chrome and Firefox browsers.
Temasys launched the licensed plugin for Internet Explorer and Safari in October 2014, allowing businesses to apply their branding, user interfaces and customer experiences to their WebRTC-enabled services. This followed the introduction of a free version of the plugin, which has been downloaded and used more than 250,000 times, with several million minutes of use by the developer community.
"We have been spurred on not just by the success of the free version of our plugin, but also by the feedback and overwhelming number of requests from developers and enterprises wanting customizations and visualizing new use cases. Having both a free and a commercial plugin is a way for us to help WebRTC's adoption grow faster, so we can start providing services earlier to more underserved user groups," concluded Wilcox.
WebRTC is an up-and-coming, Internet-based method of communications that lets users make voice calls, video chat, share files and more, all via browsers and other applications. While browsers such as Chrome, Firefox and Opera natively support WebRTC, Internet Explorer and Safari did not until Temasys launched the free plugin in May 2014.
Temasys is a member of the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) standards committee and the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) working group that are defining WebRTC technology. These roles enable Temasys to develop WebRTC plugins and other solutions as soon as new standards emerge, enabling its partners and their customers to provide brand-differentiating communications experiences.
Temasys stays true to its original pledge to drive adoption of WebRTC. The free plugin with Temasys' branding will remain available for download at: https://temasys.atlassian.net/wiki/display/TWPP/WebRTC+Plugins
