Tellabs and Agile Networks transform wireless broadband across the state of Ohio
Tellabs® 8600 System increases communication reliability for first responders in Ohio
NAPERVILLE, Ill., June 7, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- When you call 911 in an emergency, first responders need communication networks that quickly and reliably deliver critical information. That's why Tellabs and Agile Networks teamed up to build a state-of-the-art broadband infrastructure that supports emergency and other vital communication services in the state of Ohio.
The wireless broadband network will provide the state and its municipalities with high-speed broadband coverage. In addition to emergency services, the network will enable innovations such as video monitoring and surveillance and smart grid management. It will also deliver wireless high-speed Internet services to more than 3 million residences and businesses, including many currently underserved rural locations.
The key benefits of the new network include:
a) improved reliability to ensure high-quality communication channels
b) low latency to limit the delay of information delivery, especially in emergency situations
c) crucial redundancy to provide back-up communication channels in case of interruptions
d) efficient cost-savings due to the elimination of leased T1 lines to help taxpayers save money.
"The reliability, reach and capacity of this network will provide a high-speed backbone for economic development and innovation, such as smart fields for oil and gas monitoring," said Dan Kelly, executive vice president, global products at Tellabs. "The network will help Ohio maintain its existing services while adding new offerings such as IP VPN and MPLS."
The network, a combination of microwave and fiber-optics links, uses the Tellabs 8600 System to build new capabilities and add new services, including:
The Tellabs® 8000 Intelligent Network Manager will help simplify provisioning of the network while bringing more visibility into network performance. Tellabs Professional Services, through collaboration with Agile Networks, will develop the network architecture, deliver detailed design packages, and integrate the components of the solution.
"Ohio will have the first network of its kind to provide metropolitan infrastructure to micropolitan communities," said Kyle Quillen, CTO at Agile Networks. "The network will position Ohio as a leader in a state-wide broadband infrastructure, leveling a playing field for many communities that currently do not have reliable broadband services."
