Tellabs Adds Intelligence, Ethernet and Capacity to Create Smart Mobile Backhaul
Smart mobile backhaul enables superior network visibility, traffic engineering and network optimization
NAPERVILLE, Ill., Feb. 3, 2011 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ --Thanks to the explosive demand for iPads and smartphones, the mobile Internet, video and cloud computing are today's fastest-growing telecom services. Though the growing amount of traffic puts more pressure on networks, the revenue per bit for high-capacity video and cloud computing services remains small compared with machine-to-machine and traditional voice services. Mobile service providers need to advance their mobile backhaul networks to meet changing customer needs.
To enable service providers to handle growing bandwidth demands, Tellabs is advancing its market-leading mobile backhaul to the next level. Tellabs smart mobile backhaul solution provides:
a.) |
Improved cost-efficiency: Tellabs reduced the cost per bit for high-capacity services such as video. |
|
b.) |
Greater capacity: Service providers can offer new, high-capacity services and support machine-to-machine and traditional voice services, which use less capacity, but need to be highly reliable. |
|
c.) |
Added intelligence: Joining mobile backhaul with a smart mobile packet core enables application awareness, network visibility and control, and network optimization for performance and cost. |

Smart Mobile Backhaul
In 2011, Tellabs will deliver smart mobile backhaul solutions, in which Tellabs® 8600 Managed Edge System and Tellabs® 8800 Multiservice Router Series mobile backhaul networks work in conjunction with the Tellabs® SmartCore® 9100 mobile packet core platform, all managed by the Tellabs® 8000 Intelligent Network Manager and supported by mobile backhaul professional services expertise. Combined mobile backhaul, packet core capabilities and professional services enable superior network visibility, traffic engineering and optimal utilization of backhaul capacity, especially in LTE networks. In 2012, Tellabs will enhance its smart mobile backhaul solution with dynamic capabilities to enable new revenue streams from advertising and applications.
Tellabs® 8600 Managed Edge System
The next-generation Tellabs® 8600 Managed Edge System provides simultaneous support of Layer 2 and Layer 3 capabilities in a single platform. Service providers can pick the carrier-class 2G and 3G, HSPA+ and LTE architecture that best suits their needs, since the platform supports Ethernet, IP VPNs and multiservice backhaul with pseudowires. And, the Ethernet OAM (operations, administration and maintenance) provides efficient network diagnostics and monitoring capabilities to maintain Quality of Service (QoS).
To meet the capacity challenge presented by new mobile Internet and video services, Tellabs tripled the current node capacity of the Tellabs® 8600 system. The Tellabs® 8600 system provides an improved LTE-enabled backhaul solution all the way to the cell site. Tellabs' newest cell site switches, the Tellabs® 8609 and Tellabs® 8611 Access Switches, will be available this year. They will provide unmatched throughput in a small (1 RU or 2 RU) device, remarkable port density paired with Ethernet and multiservice support – all in a single switch.
Tellabs® 8800 Multiservice Router Series
In 2010, the Tellabs® 8800 series more than doubled its switching and Ethernet port capacity to 360Gbps full-duplex. Building on its distributed Ethernet Line Card (ELC) architecture, in 2011 Tellabs will further enhance the IP/Ethernet OAM and performance monitoring capabilities of the Tellabs® 8800 series, including the ability to support thousands of Bidirectional Forwarding Detection (BFD) sessions per node. With such scalability and performance, service providers can confidently evolve their mobile backhaul networks and support thousands of 2G, 3G or LTE cell sites per Tellabs® 8800 node.
"We are focused on helping customers succeed with smart mobile backhaul networks," said Dan Kelly, executive vice president, Tellabs global products. "We've enhanced the scalability of networks by tripling the capacity of the Tellabs® 8600 platform and more than doubling the capacity of the Tellabs® 8800 platform."
