Television Music Producer and Founder of Worldwide Performing Arts Company, The Young Americans Passes at age 90
LOS ANGELES, July 6, 2017 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Young Americans announced the passing of its founder, Milton C. Anderson. Mr. Anderson passed away peacefully with his family by his side in northern Michigan, July 4th 2017. Known for creating America's first show choir, Mr. Anderson is recognized globally not only for his choral arrangement artistry but also for his passionate achievements in music and arts education advocacy.
Before founding The Young Americans in 1962, Mr. Anderson worked as a musical director at CBS television on shows including Rawhide and The Twilight Zone. Mr. Anderson founded The Young Americans to showcase to the world how wonderfully influential young people could be, and used the power of music to inspire, bring hope, and create bridges of understanding across cultures and audiences worldwide.
In the early years he directed The Young Americans in more than 27 musical numbers and multiple television specials on CBS, NBC, and ABC. During that time Mr. Anderson worked with some of the most legendary entertainers of the century including Gene Kelly, Fred Astaire, Bing Crosby, Judy Garland, Johnny Mathis, and Julie Andrews. In the mid 1990's, Mr. Anderson turned the focus of The Young Americans organization to music education and advocacy and co-created The Young Americans Music Outreach program that continues to tour the USA and the world today.
"Milt believed that young people could indeed change the world by sharing their heart and soul freely with others using music as a tool for connection," said The Young Americans Chief Artistic Officer, Bill Brawley. "His influence is infinite, it goes beyond the thousands of Young American alumni whose lives were influenced by Milt, but also reaches out across the entire world where over one million young people's lives have been changed forever by participating in the Music Outreach Tours. It's been the greatest honor of my life," continues Brawley, "to have worked beside him for over 40 years and create together all of the magic that has made The Young Americans so inspirational through the years."
Today, The Young Americans continues to be a global sensation and is now the largest non-profit youth music education advocacy organization in the world. The performing group currently has 320 cast members, all who attend The Young Americans College of the Performing Arts, and has taken its love of music and performing all over the world. Its "Turn Up The Music" International Music Outreach Tours have visited hundreds of communities, across 32 countries and 5 continents, influencing over one million children worldwide.
"Milt spent his entire life committed to The Young Americans and to the belief that music has a profound way of connecting the world," said Phil Lisle, President of The Young Americans Board of Directors. "As a Board, we are all committed to preserving and honoring Mr. Anderson's legacy and ensuring that The Young Americans continue to 'inspire the world through music," as was Milt's original dream."
Milt is survived by his loving wife Susan, his five children Susan, Steve, Missy, Dawn, Tina, and 15 grandchildren. A memorial service will be held FRIDAY JULY 14 at 11am at Boyne Highlands Resort in Harbor Springs, Michigan. An additional memorial service will also be held in Southern California this fall, details to be announced. In lieu of flowers, the Anderson family has asked that family and friends donate to The Young Americans Scholarship Fund.
