Telecommunications Workers Union Elects New National President
BURNABY, BC, May 27, 2013 /CNW/ - Telecommunications Workers Union (TWU) National President, Lee Riggs, 50, a native of Kelowna, B.C., was elected by TWU delegates during the recent 2013 Annual TWU Convention which took place in Calgary, Alberta, from May 6-10.
"I am humbled and so proud to have been elected to serve the TWU membership," said Mr. Riggs. He continued, "The telecommunications industry is growing in Canada and we, as Canadians, have a responsibility to ensure that workers are well represented, whether we are dealing with individual rights, health and safety issues or keeping good jobs in Canada."
Mr. Riggs was hired at 19 to work for BC. Tel (later to become Telus) and May 2013 marked a 32-year milestone since he was hired. Mr. Riggs has worked in Operator Services, Clerical and Installation and Repair as a ladder truck operator, been involved with Workers Compensation Board advocacy, health and safety, Collective Agreement negotiations and labour relations related matters. Mr. Riggs has been a labour activist his entire career and has held many positions within the TWU. He was first elected as a TWU Business Agent in 2006, a position he held until elected National TWU President on May 10, 2013. Mr. Riggs is also a trustee of the Telecommunication Workers Pension Plan, serves on the Board of Directors of Concert Properties and is a member of ACM Advisors Investment Committee, a mortgage Investment Company, and as a Director on the board of Castle One Investments.
