Telco SOA Market Changes Mean Good News for Huawei
New service-layer transformation technology is changing the telco SOA market for the better, says Heavy Reading Services Software Insider
NEW YORK, Sept. 8 /PRNewswire/ -- The arrival of easier-to-implement service-layer transformation technology is bringing some significant changes to the telco service-oriented architecture (SOA) sector, including not only making it easier for Tier 2/3 and emerging markets operators to deploy service-layer transformation at a reasonable cost, but also enabling new competitors such as Huawei to make serious inroads into the market, according to the latest report from Heavy Reading Services Software Insider (www.heavyreading.com/servsoftware), a paid research service of TechWeb's Light Reading (www.lightreading.com).
Off-the-Shelf Products Bring Big Changes to Telco SOA analyzes telco SOA frameworks, focusing on the development of standardized products that enable faster and more cost-effective deployment of service-layer transformation. The report explores the limits to the level of industrialization that can be applied to service-layer transformation, as well as vendor strategies for service-layer transformation. The report profiles and analyzes 10 leading companies in the sector.

"Over the past three years, the number of vendors with service-layer transformation solutions has grown, and the largest systems integrators, network equipment vendors, and BSS/OSS vendors are developing increasingly sophisticated transformation approaches," says Caroline Chappell, research analyst with Heavy Reading Services Software Insider and author of the report. "A critical weapon in these vendors' transformation arsenal is their out-of-the-box service-layer framework, which they can apply to any operator's set of service-layer challenges and customize accordingly."
Operators urgently must transform their service layers, but many have delayed initiatives because transformation is perceived as too difficult, expensive, and risky to achieve, Chappell reports. "Vendors are responding by rolling out SOA-based service-layer frameworks that allow them to carry out transformation projects as subsets of an overall service-layer transformation," she says. "They can then build on initial projects over time, adding SOA-based service-layer function incrementally and protecting a customer's investment."
Huawei is emerging as a key company to watch in the service-layer market, Chappell says. "It has streaked ahead of the competition with a full SOA-based framework and complete, integrated portfolio of OSS/BSS/SDP products," she notes, adding that Amdocs and Huawei have moved furthest toward SOA-based compliance with the TM Forum eTOM process model.
Other key findings of Off-the-Shelf Products Bring Big Changes to Telco SOA include:
- The industrialization of service-layer transformation is underway, as vendors roll out pre-orchestrated sets of SOA business services and pre-integrated BSS/OSS components.
- Alcatel-Lucent, Accenture, and IBM lead the charge toward an industrialized service layer, while HP and Ericsson focus on telco market elements that are dragging their feet.
- New approaches help vendors to bring SOA transformation within the reach of smaller, resource-constrained operators.
