Carlos Slim Helu Announces "Getting Ready for Work" Platform
MEXICO CITY, April 14, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- From today through Sunday, April 27, Telcel's Aldea Digital – Infinitum, the largest digital inclusion event in the world, will be open to the public, and will offer digital education, culture, and entertainment to people of all ages and technological abilities.
The inauguration ceremony was attended by Mexico City's mayor, Dr. Miguel Angel Mancera Espinosa; Mexico's Undersecretary of Communications, Jose Ignacio Peralta Sanchez; United Nations representative of Education, Science and Culture in Mexico, Dr. Nuria Sanz Gallego; Mexico's Coordinator of National Digital Strategy of the Presidency, Ms. Alejandra Lagunes Soto Ruiz; President of the Carlos Slim Foundation, Carlos Slim Helu; President of Grupo Carso, Carlos Slim Domit and Managing Director of Telmex, Hector Slim Seade.
During his opening remarks, Mr. Carlos Slim Helu, President of the Carlos Slim Foundation, announced the launch of "Getting Ready for Work." This educational platform will provide free online job training across different industries so that people of all educational backgrounds can develop the skills that will help them find employment opportunities in trades such as carpentry, plumbing, blacksmithing, masonry, welding, managing data networks, electrical and technical careers in installation, and computer science and repair.
According to Mr. Slim, "Getting Ready for Work will use cutting-edge technology to offer job training for people of all backgrounds across a wide variety of industries. We're proud of the opportunities this initiative will provide and hope to add training for new professions in the coming months."
With the latest technology and the most advanced training methods, the website http://capacitate.fundacioncarlosslim.org offers training plans through video micro-classes, exercises, and evaluations for skills development, which can be easily accessed and used without any time limits or special requirements.
Hector Slim, Managing Director of Telmex, explained that the Aldea Digital is an inclusive cultural and technological space of free access, enabling people to develop digital skills by placing all the initiatives of Telmex's Education and Digital Culture Program within reach: Early Childhood Education, TELMEX Digital Library, Academic resources, TelmexHub, Inttelmex IT, and the Khan Academy in Spanish, all through the support of the Carlos Slim Foundation.
For 17 days, children, adults and seniors with varying degrees of digital skills will have access to the Internet and computers. They will also have access to activities ranging from over 40 workshops to conferences led by over 40 world leaders in information technology.
Computers and tablets are available to participants at no cost in different areas of the event for onsite use. The different areas include a free connection area, conference auditorium, 20 classrooms for workshops and the main esplanade, where various activities will take place.
This exciting event will provide broadband Internet access with connection speeds of 100 Gigabytes per second via the Infinitum network, the highest speed that has ever been enjoyed at an event of this kind in the world; equivalent to a million people connected online through gaming consoles or downloading 75,000 high-resolution photos for large format printing in a second. There will also be Mobile WiFi access and Telcel's 4GLTE network.
Visitors of all ages can attend workshops like My First Approach to the Computer, My First Email Account, Basic Robotics, Secure Browsing and Internet Security, Basic Digital Animation, Digital Entrepreneurship, the World of Social Networking, Building your First Windows App, among many others. They may also attend lectures given by world leaders and other experts in the fields of telecommunications, technological innovation, entrepreneurship and technology for education and health, such as Steve Wozniak, co-founder of Apple; Salman Khan, founder of Khan Academy; futurist, Andrew Hessel; Moshe Hogeg, Director of Mobli; Walter Bender, member of MediaLab MIT and Hamandoun Toure, Secretary- General of the International Telecommunications Union (ITU), as well as others. All this can be enjoyed at no charge.
